Paper 1 — B.E./B.Tech Pattern (Most Important)
Physics · Chemistry · Mathematics — 75 Questions · 300 Marks · 3 HoursPaper 1 is the most important paper — attempted by all engineering aspirants targeting NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and IITs (via JEE Advanced). Every section (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) has 25 questions — 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Value Questions.

| Subject | Sec A (MCQ) | Sec B (Numerical) | Total Qs | Marks | Marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 📐 Mathematics | 20 MCQ | 5 Numerical | 25 | 100 | +4/−1 (MCQ) +4/−1 (Numerical) |

Important from 2025: All 5 numerical questions in Section B are now compulsory. Before 2025, students could choose 5 from 10 optional numericals. This change means you must prepare all numerical types thoroughly — no skipping allowed.
Paper 2A & 2B — B.Arch and B.Plan Pattern
Architecture and Planning aspirantsJEE Main 2027 Marking Scheme
+4 correct · −1 wrong · 0 unattempted| Paper | Total Marks | Correct | Wrong MCQ | Unattempted | Drawing (2A only) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) | 300 Marks | +4 | −1 | 0 | N/A |
| Paper 2A (B.Arch) | 400 Marks | +4 | −1 | 0 | Evaluator (50M × 2) |
| Paper 2B (B.Plan) | 400 Marks | +4 | −1 | 0 | N/A |
Negative Marking Strategy: A wrong answer costs you 5 marks net (you lose +4 potential gain AND get −1 penalty = 5-mark swing). Only attempt a question when you are 70%+ confident. Use elimination method when 2 options remain. Never randomly guess MCQs.

Key Highlights of JEE Main 2027 Pattern
Important points every JEE aspirant must know🖥️ Computer-Based Test (CBT) — Online Mode
JEE Main 2027 is fully conducted in CBT (Computer-Based Test) mode for Paper 1 and Paper 2B. Paper 2A has CBT for Maths and Aptitude but offline (pen-and-paper) for Drawing. Familiarize yourself with the CBT interface through NTA's free mock tests at nta.ac.in.
📝 All 75 Questions Compulsory — No Optional Questions
From 2025 onwards, all 5 numerical questions in Section B are compulsory. Before 2025, students could choose 5 from 10 optional numericals. This means complete preparation of all numerical types for all 3 subjects is now mandatory.
📅 Two Sessions — Best of Two Considered
JEE Main is held twice — Session 1 (January) and Session 2 (April). NTA considers the best of the two session percentile scores for final merit. Students can appear in one or both sessions. Most students appear in both for a better chance.
🏆 JEE Advanced Gateway — Top 2.5 Lakh Qualify
JEE Main is also the qualifying round for JEE Advanced (IIT admission). Top 2.5 lakh unique candidates (across both sessions) are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Only 1 attempt at JEE Advanced is allowed per year.
📊 Percentile-Based Score Normalisation
JEE Main uses percentile scoring — not raw marks — for the final merit list. Percentile accounts for varying difficulty levels across different dates and shifts. Your percentile score compares your performance with all candidates who appeared in the same session.
🌐 13 Language Options Available
JEE Main question paper is available in 13 languages — English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Language is chosen at the time of application form filling.
Expert Preparation Tips — Sarthak Classes Jind
📐 Mathematics (100 Marks)
Focus on Calculus (15–20% of JEE Main Maths), Coordinate Geometry (15–20%), Algebra and Probability. Solve 30+ problems daily. DPP sheets and chapter tests are essential for Maths mastery.
⚙️ Physics (100 Marks)
Mechanics, Electrostatics and Modern Physics together account for ~50% of Physics. Focus on formula derivation understanding, not just memorization. All PYQs 2015–2026 are highly repetitive — solve them all.
⚗️ Chemistry (100 Marks)
Inorganic = NCERT line by line. Organic = reaction mechanisms (name reactions important). Physical = daily problem practice. All three branches equally important. Chemistry is the highest-scoring subject with practice.
🔢 Numerical Strategy
All 5 numericals are compulsory. Practice integer-type answers carefully — no options to guess from. Focus on unit consistency, significant figures and precise calculation. Attempt all 5 — no negative marking confusion here (same +4/−1 as MCQ since 2025).
📝 Mock Test Schedule
Full JEE Main mock (3 hrs, 300 marks) at least monthly. Chapter mocks weekly at Sarthak Classes. From January: weekly full mocks. Sunday: free doubt session 10 AM–12 PM for all enrolled students.
🎯 Score Targets for Good Colleges
240+ marks → NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Jalandhar (good branches). 200–240 → IIIT Allahabad, state NITs. 160–200 → GFTIs and private good colleges. 280+ → Top NITs (Civil, Mech). 280/300 → JEE Advanced qualifier (top ranks).
