JEE Main 2027 — Quick Overview

Paper 1, Paper 2A and Paper 2B at a glance

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2027 is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) twice a year — Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April. JEE Main is the gateway to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and also qualifies the top 2.5 lakh candidates for JEE Advanced (IIT admission).

There are three papers in JEE Main: Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech, Paper 2A for B.Arch and Paper 2B for B.Plan. Most students appear for Paper 1. Understanding the pattern is the first step towards effective preparation.

ℹ️

Best of Two Sessions: A candidate's best score from Session 1 and Session 2 (if they appear in both) is considered for the final JEE Main percentile and rank.

JEE Main Marking Scheme

+4 for correct MCQ · −1 for wrong MCQ · 0 for numerical wrong
+4
Correct Answer
Full 4 marks for every correct MCQ or Numerical answer
−1
Wrong MCQ
1 mark deducted only for incorrect Section A (MCQ) answers
0
Wrong Numerical / Skip
No penalty for a wrong numerical answer or an unattempted question
💡

Sarthak Expert Tip: Since numerical questions carry zero negative marking, attempt all 10 per subject even with partial confidence — only your best 5 are scored. For MCQs, attempt only when 70%+ confident to avoid the −1 penalty.

Expert Preparation Tips — Sarthak Classes Faculty

Subject-wise strategy from our JEE faculty

📖 Master NCERT First

80% of JEE Main Chemistry and 70% of Physics basics come directly from NCERT. Read every line before moving to advanced problem sets.

📝 DPP Practice Daily

Solve a minimum of 30 questions per day per subject. Sarthak Classes' DPP sheets are calibrated exactly to JEE Main level.

🎯 Attempt Both Sessions

Session 1 is a practice run. Learn from mistakes, fix gaps, and perform better in Session 2 — your best score counts.

⏱️ Time Management

3 hours for 75 questions = 2.4 min/question. Practice speed with timed mock tests every week.

📊 Focus on High-Weightage

Mechanics, Calculus, Coordination Chemistry and Organic Chemistry — master these four areas for 40%+ marks.

🔁 Revise Previous Year Papers

Solve the last 10 years' JEE Main papers. NTA frequently repeats concept-based questions with new numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

JEE Main 2027 exam pattern common doubts
How many questions are in JEE Main Paper 1?+

What is the marking scheme for JEE Main?+
MCQs (Section A): +4 for correct, −1 for wrong. Numerical (Section B): +4 for correct, 0 for wrong — no negative marking on numerical questions.
How many sessions does JEE Main have?+
Two sessions — Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April. A candidate's best score across both attempts is considered for the final percentile and rank.
Is there negative marking in Section B (Numerical)?+
No. Numerical value questions carry no negative marking, so it is safe to attempt all 10 per subject — only the best 5 responses are considered for scoring.
What is the age limit for JEE Main?+
There is no upper age limit for JEE Main (removed since 2021). A candidate can attempt JEE Main for a maximum of 3 consecutive years after passing Class XII.
